Clinical observation of the Supracondylar Fracture of the Humerus in Children

Abstract
Supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children is the most common fracture of the elbow and often present significant problems in management.
Forty-six patients with supracondylar fracture of the humerus managed at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Jeonbug National University Hospital from June 1977 to May 1979 were analyzed clinically and the summary of the results were as follows :
1. There were 31 boys and 15 girls and the average age was 8.5 years, The left was involved in 29 patients and the right in 17.
2. The cause of, the supracondylar fracture of the humerus was mostly due to falling down(96%).
3. Forty-four patients (96%) had posterior displacement of the distal fragment and two had.anterior displacement.
4. 13 fractures were treated by closed reduction and cast immobilization in a cast or splint ; 4, by Dunlop¢¥s traction ; 2, by side arm skeletal traction ; 4, by overhead skeletal traction ; 4, by closed reduction and percutaneous pinning ; and 19, by open reduction and. K-wire fixation.
5. In the forty-six patients completely evaluated, an excellent result was obtained in 35 (76%), a good result in 8(17%), and an unsatisfactory result in 3(7%). A satisfactory result was, therefore, obtained in 93% of the forty-six patients.
6. The type of treatment at least as observed in this study had little effect on the clinical result, change in carrying angle and limitation of the elbow motion.
